Servo: a tecnologia mais consolidada de medição de inventário ganha nova geração de inteligência e conectividade

In a global landscape marked by narrow operating margins and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, the reliability of measurement systems has become a critical factor for the sustainability and competitiveness of terminals. Small inaccuracies in these processes can result in direct financial losses, compromise operational efficiency, and significantly increase the risk of environmental incidents and regulatory penalties. They also weigh on the credibility that business partners, insurers, and investors place in a terminal's inventory data. In custody transfer operations, the measured inventory is, in practice, the asset that sustains the business.

The major challenge lies in maintaining high levels of accuracy under adverse operating conditions, such as tanks with turbulence, density variations, or the presence of vapor—situations where conventional technologies often have limitations. There is also a direct commercial impact from investing in high-precision systems and safety devices, resulting in increased storage capacity without the need to build new tanks.

Servo and the evolution of a well-established technology in inventory measurement.

Servo-operated technology is one of the oldest in precision inventory measurement and custody transfer applications. Its longevity, however, does not mean a loss of relevance. Its operating principle continues to be used in situations with stringent metrological requirements, supported by decades of development and improvement.

Throughout this journey, Honeywell Enraf, the technology manufacturer and represented by FLUXO in Brazil, has built a trajectory of over 100 years in industrial measurement. Its Servo 854 model was a market leader for more than 30 years and accumulated over 65,000 installed units worldwide. Now, this evolution reaches the Smart Servo 954, a new generation that preserves the measurement principle and mechanical robustness established by the previous model, with a complete renewal of the embedded electronics.

This maturity has concrete technical value. In applications such as liquefied gas storage, the servo displacement measurement principle remains, for many industry experts, the most reliable way to guarantee the required metrological uncertainty, even in extended installations such as caverns, for which the Smart Servo 954 offers a measurement range of up to 150 meters.

From the 854 to the 954: what does the new electronics bring?

The Smart Servo 954 diagnostic package has also been expanded. In addition to continuous monitoring of SIL-2/SIL-3 safety loops with the shortest cycle time in its class, the Servo Auto Test (SAT) now covers six new areas: testing of... run-down The servo system offers enhanced drum imbalance diagnostics, bearing status history, advanced Safety/SIL diagnostics, advanced firmware diagnostics, and unique vibration diagnostics. Together, these routines anticipate mechanical wear and failures before they affect measurement, reducing the need for corrective maintenance in the field.

Bluetooth and Smart Connect: managing multiple sites on a single platform.

The advancements incorporated into the Smart Servo 954 also extend to the interface between the equipment and the teams responsible for its operation and maintenance. In the Bluetooth version, the instrument's BPM board is updated to incorporate a connectivity card, without altering any of the meter's existing functionalities. This new interface enables integration with Enraf Smart Connect, a Honeywell tool that replaces and expands upon the well-known Engauge, offering simplified commissioning and diagnostics for the entire Enraf meter line, including legacy equipment.

In practice, Smart Connect offers features to configure and diagnose equipment via laptop or tablet with Bluetooth on top of the tank, without interrupting the existing BPM network communication during diagnosis. The tool organizes the operation in a hierarchical structure formed by Sites, Assets, and Data, and brings together geographically distributed terminals on a single platform, with more than 700 configuration parameters available per meter. Teams can also create and share customized "presets," standardizing commissioning routines between sites, and have access to an embedded user manual in e-book format, which streamlines training and daily operations.

For operators with multiple terminals, this type of centralization has strategic importance by reducing travel and field operation time, as well as creating a standardized view of the installed base of instruments, regardless of the location of each site.

Measurement as a strategic factor for the operation.

For terminal and process industries, the choice of measurement technology must consider not only the accuracy of the instrument, but also its ability to contribute to safety, operational continuity, maintenance, and efficient asset management. In the case of Honeywell's servo technology, this track record has been built over decades of field operation, with accumulated know-how and advancements in electronics and connectivity that keep the technology up-to-date for inventory and custody transfer applications.

In this scenario, keeping up with the sector's digitalization is only part of the equation. Investing in technology with proven effectiveness also means reducing measurement uncertainties, making better use of the storage capacity of existing assets, and having consistent data for operational and commercial decisions, as well as strengthening the confidence of partners, insurers, and investors in the numbers that underpin the operation.
