Flow contributes to an environmental project at Copasa

Per Jose Marinho

Copasa (Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais) started the implementation of a pioneering project in Brazil for environmental protection and energy conservation at the Arrudas Sewage Treatment Station, in Belo Horizonte - MG, consisting of an odor and an energy cogeneration system.

Fluxo, through the Integrated Solutions Department, is actively participating in this project, being responsible for the energy cogeneration system. The scope of Fluxo comprises the treatment of biogas, Capstone microturbines and heat exchangers.

The biogas released in the digesters is treated by removing water, siloxanes, particulates, H2S (hydrogen sulphide), among others, and compressed to be burned in microturbines, which generate electricity and heat. The heat is used to heat the sludge, which releases more biogas.

Enterprises like this are beginning to be widespread in several states of Brazil. Fluxo is prepared to collaborate with knowledge and application of state-of-the-art technology worldwide for these technologies, contributing to the success of these initiatives. The conversion of biogas into electrical energy aims to improve the overall performance of sewage treatment, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, helping to increase the energy efficiency of the treatment plant, and, consequently, the feasibility of basic sanitation in the country.
