Concerned about the health of Lagoa do Armaz\u00e9m, Petrobras installed two oil-in-water monitoring systems at the Pipeline Terminal, in Tramanda\u00ed \u2013 RS. The purpose of each of the systems is to monitor the presence of oil or hydrocarbons in the water in the open rainwater collection channel. The discharge of water from the channel goes directly to Lagoa do Armaz\u00e9m and from there to the sea. By monitoring the presence of oil, it is possible to prevent, in the event of an internal accident with a spill, the discharge of water contaminated with oil into the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gate automation process is in the assembly phase. With the supervision work of the oil-in-water monitor ID 223-500 from Ionics Leakwise, the system starts to operate automatically, through the connection between the monitor and the floodgates. Once detected the presence of hydrocarbons or oil in the water, by the monitor, the exit gate closes, interrupting the rain discharge and avoiding the contamination of the lake. At the same time, another gate opens and the contaminated water returns to the treatment plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The systems are also used to improve or control the oil content in the water entered by collecting in the SAO (water and oil separator), warning of excess oil. The monitor used is model ID 221, which can be used in installations that have a high level variation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based on the bench operating history and the results of the field operation analysis in recent months, the Adory Medeiros Jr. terminal technical consultant recommends using the system: \u201cthe instrument showed good accuracy and repeatability, proving to be an excellent tool to support the control and safety of industrial effluent systems, preserving the environment from possible catastrophes\u201d, says the consultant.
